18 Best Costco Buys for a Plant Based Kitchen

Costco is my favorite bulk retail warehouse for oh-so-many reasons. They have a massive supply of organic and plant based options, free samples, they treat their employees well, and they have a high standard for their suppliers. Here is a list of my top 18 Costco must-haves for plant based kitchens!

While some Costco items are temporary or seasonal, most of these bulk supplies stand to last for several years. I have started to notice an uptick in the past two years in organic and plant based items, horray! While not all of the items on my list are 100% organic, they do all meet my rigorous criteria for healthy options (while also considering the importance of these being organic given the updated guidelines of the dirty dozen etc.) So without further adieu, I present to you my 18 very favorite Costco deals.

Why you need it: I love this bread. It’s organic and is loaded with whole grains, nuts and seeds. Bonus, it tastes good and it’s easy to find! 260mg ALA OMEGA-3, 5g of plant based protein, 5g of fiber – this is a kickass bread.

Why you need it: I’m all about pre-sliced apples. This is a great time saver for kids (or adult) lunchboxes and healthy grab-able snacks. It’s not always easy to find organic sliced apples, and I think it’s important to only buy organic apples as they are #5 on the 2019 dirty dozen list.

Giorgio Organic Baby Bella Mushrooms

Why you need it: I’ve bought these at Costco for years. They’re great quality, a great price, and I think asparagus is something that belongs in everyone’s refrigerator. It can be easily integrated into many recipes, but is also an awesome in case of emergency break glass staple to have as you can toss it in the oven with some seasonings for less than 20 mins and its done. Pre-diabetic or diabetic? You need asparagus; it contains chromium which helps insulin move glucose from the bloodstream into your cells.

Not diabetic? Asparagus is just straight up good for you as it’s loaded with fiber, folate, and essential vitamins A, C, E and K.

Tropicland Organic Broccoli Florets

Retail price: $6.99 for 4 lbs

Why you need it: I always keep frozen broccoli at home. It’s great for kids and, in a pinch, it’s so easy to steam or toss into a stir-fry. I prefer to cook with florets only, so I appreciate that this doesn’t include stems – I am also really happy with amount of broccoli for the price. Broccoli is also a great source of vitamins K and C, folate, and potassium.

Clovis Farms Organic Super Smoothie Blend

Retail price: $10.79 for 3 lbs

Loaded with potassium, fiber, vitamin C, iron, and antioxidants, this is a really great way to start your day.

Kirkland Organic Quinoa

Why you need it: This is a great value. I love quinoa, it’s high in fiber and is one of the few plant based proteins that contains all of the 9 essential amino acids! It is also gluten-free, and contains magnesium, vitamins B and E, iron, potassium, calcium, and phosphorus. This is a great grain choice and does well in bowls, soups, and baked goods.

Kirkland Organic Apple Sauce

Retail price: $8.99 for 24 – 3.17oz pouches

Why you need it: I love applesauce, my kids love applesauce, and I love that this applesauce doesn’t list “apple juice” as an ingredient. This applesauce is made out of two things, 1) organic apples and 2) ascorbic acid (to protect color). That’s it. I buy at least two of these every time I go, they are great for school snacks (and adult snacks!) and travel.
